I have heard similar things (lift by wheel arch) and go for the best of both worlds i.e. lift by both the latch and wheel arch. Mind you in a perfect world two persons are supposed to lift the bonnet

The UK TSSC does a brilliant spring compressor, its a two metal plates with bolts jobby and you insert the spring/shock undo the nuts and all are seperated. Its also used in the Practical Classic Spi
