The only thing I did which you did not reference was to soak all the valve train components, specifically lifters, in oil for a few days prior to installation. Don't know whether it helped or not. A

The oil filter that came off the side of the engine is a stp s3512(it's a little short one that just screws into the side of the block). Can't seem to find one of these at the local auto parts store

TBON states that black on black was part of the color choices for the 947 series of cars with that exterior color. If you like the blue put in blue. TBON shows four interior color options for 76 Balm
