Did it work before you changed polarity? Assuming that someone didn't modify the circuitry, the temp gauge is not polarity sensitive so it should work equally well with positive or negative ground. I

I'm not sure about the 76 but I seem to recall that the 74 had a separate brown wire to the alternator separate fromt he multi-pin connector. The wiring diagram in Dan Master's book (Do you have one?

I vote for the cam lobes. If the #4 intake valve is closing late the compression pressure will be lower. But then the readings are not that much different considering he rounded them off to the neare
