Its a fluid which expands under pressure increasing the force within the system. Sort of like power brakes w/o any hardware alteration. George

I have seen a special snap used on boat covers which looks pretty much like a regular snap but the male part is asymetrical so that you have to lift from one side to release it. Look in marine supply
