Take out the boot and center console so you can get at the individual shifter rods and see if you can push/pull and wiggle it out that way. Maybe one of the bushings or pins has worn/disintegrated an

I'll have to try this when mine gets ready for the road (I'm predicting about one year) When I drove it my second gear grunched on the upshift, let alone the downshift, so it may be too far gone. But

I have the same situation, except 67 1600 that ran until about a year ago, has rebuilt motor, new top and tires, but is otherwise in sad shape and much in need of TLC and restoration. I typed in dats

The sequence is right, and with a 68 you have a dual master cylander so as long as you start farthest and work to closest it dosnt matter so much if you do back or front first. And if they still need
