It was indeed 3000RW, as driven by Harper and Proctor at Le Mans, and probably the most important and historic 60's Alpine ever. I found this link to Practical Classics which gives the full history.

I don't think that was the hole Lauri referred to. The oil filler/level check hole is to the right-hand side of the tunnel, and bunged with a huge rubber grommet +/- 10cm, which I think usually goes

I have a Covercraft (www.covercraft.com) for my SIII, with hardtop, which fits just fine, although they somewhat disturbingly advertise it as for MGB/Alpine. I seem to recall it was quite expensive,
