As I recall, you need to : 1. Remove the stops in the window channel 2. Position the Window where you can reach the channel 3. Slide the upper bar of the mechanism into the channel, I think you have

I had the same problem, when fitting an SV unit to my SIII. I just spread the window bottom channel to fit the larger rounded sliders in the mechanism, and it has worked fine for the last 10 years.

It could also be tightness in the idler arm on the opposite side to the steering box. These need frequent greasing. However, it does sound most likely it is the box. I would go with the suggestion of

Lauri, The window channels are different sizes between series, ithink pre SII and SIII on. You may have used parts from different series, e.g with rollers too large for the channel. Is that possible.
