A "ign switched" 12v wire should go into the resistor... then come out 7.5-9 v the other side of it to feed your ign coil. Don't know what year your car is, but that extra wire coming off the coil/re

When I was working in the sign shop we used that technique for many a year with no problems. And the local harley custom shop (Nick - who lived in a closet in his shop) used it too for custom tanks.
