Tried the Radio Shack bulbs years ago. While I kept the rheostat turned down a bit, they lasted, but this was in my wife's car - she kept turning the rheostat up full, and the bulbs kept burning out.

You do not have to remove the steering wheel!! Just remove the two sides of the hard plastic cowling. This will expose the switch. If I remember correctly, it bolts to the wiper switch. /// /// mgs@
