I had this same problem when I put in a Mallory dist. on my '74 Midget. I took the clamping ring off the car and found that over the years it had become out of round. I replaced the bolt and nut that

Oh I went through this same thing!!! Get a big fat bolt and grind that sucker square or sort of square. and keep it in a safe place for the next time.
