I played a similar game with mine. I don't know about '74, but mine a '77 has an intertia switch under the dash. Looks like a tube with a button on top. Every once in a while the switch needs a reset

I took an old 1/2" socket extension and basically hand filed it to fit the deeper part of the plug in order to get a decent grip and finally get it out. Ruined a good extension for any other purpose
