Well for racing, any time you feel the brakes go "soft". As a general rule, I'd bleed them once a season minimum. For a street car, it's once every two years, the same frequency as you should change

For street/autocross use I use and can recommend the Axxis (Repco) Metal Masters. For race I prefer Carbotech blue fronts and kelated metallic rears over the Porterfield R4's, can't comment on the R4
