I usually take the starter out. If I remember right there's a couple of flats on the hose end, so you can hold it whilst loosening the nut. Don't take the bracket off the car. CR

It's the other way around. The problem is the air being drawn in past the worn shafts/bushings. Why else would the grease in those spots be a temporary fix? CR

Paul, I've been there and done that. When the leak past the end of the butterfly shafts gets bad enough, you can't slow the engine down by use of the idle screws. It's like a leak at carb to manifold
