I agree with Barney here. Sounds like you have the later model OD tranny that doesn't have a dipstick and doesn't fill from the top. It wants the 1000 turns per mile (TPM) speedo. You have a 1280 TPM

You might try a crowfoot wrench on your torque wrench and use the low end of the spec. The running weak and backfiring sounds more like timing probs or maybe a couple of plug wires are crossed. Cheer
