I notice several references to a backup fuel pump in series with the SU pump in MGs. Not a bad idea but a couple of cautions. First, in the MG, make sure the backup pump is also a low pressure pump.

I had a similar problem and I kept blaming the carbs. The car was hard to start, cold-blooded and refused to idle below 12-1500rpm. Adjusting the valves helped some but the real culprit was bad spark
