Depending on what your recovering entails, you could let the gauge stay connected and work around it. But, if you already have everything else out, you might as well go ahead and pull it, too.

Shouldn't the shock keep the front from feeling like a marshmellow? Have you checked your shocks? Maybe they are worn and causing premature spring failure?

Yes, but I thought it was voltage that was lowered and there is a wire on many systems that runs from the starter solenoid to the coil to deliver full voltage for startup.

A ballast resistor keeps voltage down and makes it easier on coils and contact points. If you have a good aftermarket coil and electronic "breakerless" ignition then you don't need a ballast resistor
