Actually, I understand that the later cars were quite good, once they got the problems sorted out. The earlier cars had notoriously bad gearboxes that were later replaced by a different manufacturer.

Check the steering rack. Many people inject grease into it via the grease nipple. However, it is supposed to be filled with oil. If the grease stiffens up it could have the effect you mention. David
