Actually, I decided to keep it. I bought and installed an aftermarket (Wagner brand) converter. It fit reasonably well, but, like all aftermarket parts, it was not nearly as well-made as the original

The scotch-brites work well because they uniformly roughen up the old paint and are less likely to cut all the way through edges, corners, etc. But you can get them a lot cheaper than at the hardware
