You are fighting the effects of corrosion caused by Galvanic effect combined with deteriorated shaft seals. I have had to cut them apart on occasion due to the aluminum shoulder inside being too soft

When the brakes are in good condition with proper attention paid to the bleeding and pad movement, they will stop as good as anything on the road without power brakes. Still use them on my FJ20 turbo
