Thank you all, I finally got the sending unit out tonight. Tried to get a brass "drift" (is this the same as a pin punch?) at Sears since someone raised the sparks-around-gas issue. No dice, no time

When I said "wire" I meant to describe the thin metal rod which mechanically connects the plastic float to what I would guess is a rheostat wiper in the sending unit. Possibly the "orange" is from r
