The Pertronix part that I had mounted completely in the distributor. with 2 wires coming out. One wire to the poitive of the coil and the other to the neg. Magnets slip over the ditributor cam lobes

I suspect that you have checked such things, but just in case -- Is the clutch releasing all the way? May be dragging, but with synchros in the forward gears, it may go in ok, but with no synchros in
