Are you sure the u-joint flanges fit properly into the mounting plates on the diff? Note, the four bolts form a rectangle, but not a square, so they shouldn't fit properly if you turn them 90degrees.

Do note that running the wheels in gear while the car is up on jackstands means the u-joints are at the extreme of their downward angle. This can give a misleading impression of how smooth, actually

My Spitfire's supposedly rebuilt gearbox drips oil onto the exhaust pipe. It's embarrasing, really. Visual inspection shows oil all over the outside, a classic case of external lubrication. I'm guess
