Is there something special or critical in how the drive spindle is inserted for the distibutor? I'm using a longish bolt to insert it into the hole, kinda feeling my way intil it slips into the hole

OK - I tried using a plug wire straight to #1 from coil. It did not fire. I pulled the plug and turned it over, and there was spark at the gap. I'll try a new coil. But one question - could my engine

Thanks for all the advice on static timing - I got my new engine to run about 3 seconds before the dizzy slipped about 15 degrees - the clamp was too loose. I tried it with the clamp even tighter but
