As you said David, when the ignition is on I have 12vdc between - post of battery and + side of the coil. When i turn the key the voltage drops significantly. Another element that might be important

Just a guess: Did you check the fuel line between front and rear carbs? does petrol split equally between the two carbs? If the line between the two is obstructed, the rear carbs will get less petrol
