I think this is typical practice when brake boosters are employed. The assist end of the booster pushes on the rear of the cylinder, so the front brake circuit is rearward, to engage the front brakes

Besides, the ignition key is interlocked to the shifter and won't go into the locked position unless the shifter is in Park. Just for that reason. Also, doesn't this model car have the push button? P
