i would suggest taking the cover off and making sure all the gears are dissengaged, and go to the cover and make sure the levers are all in neutral. then, when re-installing the cover, double check

all the parts books i've seen (except the ones for the UK market) have the 1500 manifold as a 4-1 design with a single stromberg. however they also have catalitic converters, except i think for the 7

you should be able to rotate the distributor housing relative to the engine without any problems as long as you also rotate the positions of the wires to make sure that the rotor fires the right cyli

i had reaad somewhere that the early tr4-a's sold in the us were fitted with the solid axle because either the dealer's or triumph thought that the buyers wouldn't want to pay the extra amout it cost
