I think the timing changes were to do with emissions, not because the ignition was electronic. Since you're playing with a completely different distributor though, that really throws it in the creek.

I really think this problem is vastly over stated. The mechanics of getting a solid slug of water all the way up through the entire intake passage, and into the cylinders as a solid mass is daunting.

I haven't done it yet, but I plan on using 1/4" Luan plywood. It's light and stong. Shop it around a little, as different stores carry different grades.
