Unless you are leaking significant amounts of gearbox oil (and I suspect you'd have spotted that by now!) I doubt lack of oil is the problem - my O/D has continued to work fine when I have been long

One quick point - I've never yet (touch wood!) needed to do any work on the bottom end of my engine, but I have it on good authority that it is possible to do it without needing to remove the engine

I do vaguely remember hearing that the hardtop can be installed over the soft-top, but I fail to see how. You would have to remove the rear bar, otherwise you would not be able to get the rear bolts
