It might be cheaper to have the chambers in the head opened up. That also "deshrouds" the valves just that much more. Any really good shop will know how to do this and it should be well less than $20

Nope. Don't do that. Check that washer all the way 'round. It's supposed to lock the bolt in place. Can't remember the MG direction of normal rotation, but on Minis, you just set a wrench on the bolt

I would suggest taking the tension off the belt by loosening the alto tension nut, then check the waterpump shaft for play or sticky rotation. The "front to back" movement is not a good thing. Doing

If the relief valve is stuck open, the oil pressure will suffer greatly. I have had the plungers stick many times; this is a case for roadside repair, since running the engine like this is not wise.
