I just went through the same thing last weekend. Although the parts catalog suggests that there is a gasket, the manual doesn't have one shown as being required. I didn't install one on mine. So far

My '70 TR6 was registered as a 1972 - probably the year bought. I was able to prove to the motor vehicle registrar that it is a 1970 model and they very nicely changed my registration for a paltry C$
