If the fork is riding on the bearing at all you're risking cooking the throwout bearing. Same is true if you don't have the return springs in place (both on the pedal and on the slave cylinder). IMH

If your ammeter is pegging on discharge, you've got a shorted solenoid on the starter. The starter itself doesn't route thru the ammeter (it pulls 200 amps give or take), but the solenoid does. The
