I have been using Superclean and a brush for years. Tooth brush for the tight spots. Works great on grimey engines, rear axles, trannys, and under bonnets. But now I have a powerwasher :) That works

There should be a thin 5/16-18 nut under the knob, it locks it in the straight position so the emblem is not crooked. You might have to grind a regular nut down, I have not found these at any hardwar

It was true when the cars were new. Natural rubber parts or something like that. New seals (not nos seals) are probably made with modern rubbers and can hold up to DOT3 but I don't take a chance. DOT
