You should be able to find accelerometers much cheaper than $500! We buy a module that includes a 3-axis accelerometer and a DSP, and I think it's only about $30 in quantity. A quick Google turned up

I agree, originality is important in that I don't want to change the character or appearance of the car, but outside of that changed are fine. I would even consider a transmission conversion, though
