it would mean that the po was a racer, and was speed shifting from 1st to 2nd gear, and the 2nd gear syncro is in need of replacement. --Original Message-- From: ERW <erwilsey@ix.netcom.com> To: dats

Not necessarily. 2nd gear synchro gets more wear than any other. Think about driving in stop-and-go traffic: 1st-2nd, 2nd-3rd, 3rd-2nd, 2nd-1st. You just hit the synchros in 1st and 3rd once each, bu

Actually there are two different synchro rings involved here on second gear. One of them functions on shifts from 1st to 2nd and a different ring functions on shifts from 2nd to 3rd. Your comment is

You puch in the clutch, shift in to neutral, release the clutch and 'blip' (a technical term) the throttle, then clutch again and shift into the next gear. This was effective (and the only way) to do

I thought double clutching meant to push the clutch in, shift to neutral, let the clutch out, push ther clutch back in, shift to the gear you want and let the clutch out again. Gary Gerding, 1967 SPL

"Double-clutching" refers to the technique of shifting to neutral, then to the next gear, de-clutching (as the Brits would say) each time, making a gearchange into a two-step process, rather than one

Well, I would apply the term "blip" to the throttle action one would use to help obtain "careful rev-matching", rather than apply it to "double-clutching". For a given road speed, the engine speed (r

That's actually what double clutching is all about - it allows you to match engine and tranny input shaft speeds, reducing the load to spin up when you select the new gear. Cheers, Jim
