Hello All: Today's project was to install new rear brake shoes on my TR4. Pulled off the brake drum and...oil on the shoes and on the drum surface. OK so I ordered up some new seals, rented a hub pul

I've seen a rear hub resist an oxy torch and an 80 ton hydraulic press! It is my belief that if you press the hubs off, (as opposed to using a puller) the hubs will be damaged and eventually break.

Large puller is also suspect. I took these hubs to John Deere Axle Engineering for examination (FMA). They confirmed what I surmised. The sharp tool marks on the backside almost suggest that they we

Gary, I took mine to a company that works on trucks, the big, honkin' kind. They used a 100T press; when each hub let go, it made impressive racket. Based on my experience, a puller won't do the job.

If there is oil on the shoes only the inner sealing ring failed. There is no need to change the outer sealing ring because one does not seal against oil only against grease. If you want to change th

You probably weren't able to rent the correct type of hub puller, one that won't warp the flange and turn it into useless metal sculpture. The typical all purpose pullers you see won't cut the musta

Don't pull the hub, take the bolts off on the backing plate and remove the entire axle. Put the thing in a very big press, dress up in armor, and press away. Be prepared to run. _____________________

I've pressed a lot of these things apart and I've never broken an axle or a hub in racing duty afterwards, I switched to Southwick strictly as a prophylactic measure. I've used the aftermarket axles

I can remember have our 80 ton press involved with removing the hubs. Lots of pressure then a great whack with a copper hammer was needed to remove the parts. It was found the two parts, hub and axle

And there's no need to press the axle from the hub at all unless you're going to replace the GREASE seal or bearing itself. If you have an ole leak, it's from the diff. Those seals are in the axle tu
