Something we've covered a few times, but any good radiator shop can re-core your existing radiator with better stuff and eliminate the dead spot where the starter crank passes through. That will give

Eliminating the extension is a must, to avoid fatigue cracking and leaking coolant. I have run the stock TR3A/TR4 radiator with a shortened filler for over 15 years (w/no crank hole) My needle stays
