The really sad and astonishing thing to me is that there are no American drivers of a high enough calibre to contest for the Driver's Championship. And I know that there must be some who could do it

There is so much money involved in the "Crash and Bash" racing in this country and poor feeder systems with no defined route to the top levels, gaining a spot in F-1 will be next to impossible for ye

It probably has a lot to do with the distance and the numbers. Since there is plenty of racing in the US, most of the quality drivers stay here rather than going to Europe where you have to be in F1.
