I always thought that the shock could not do much to control squat due to the length of time the downward pull is sustained during acceleration. I figured any setting that was stiff enough to control

I have Spax tube shocks on my TR4A racer with Richard Good's springs and sway bar and have no squat. It should be noted that Triumph Tune has several rear springs sets available and you may need to
