I went through this on my 1500s a few years ago. My 1500s' cranks seemed to catch a lot of oil in the sump and blast it up the dipstick tube in left-hand turns, with the result that I always had oil

Thanks to the miracle of being retired and having time to fiddle, I've think I've answered my own question. The block casting of the early (Mk 1) 1147 that's in the race car is different from a later
