In short, it is less expensive to race a Spridget, and there are more "donor" cars out there to support an effort. The Sprite engine is more reliable as a race engine too. Just got back from a weeken

That makes sense for cars with some history. As to Spitfire vs Spridget availablility... Originally they sold roughly in the same quantities. The Spitfire has 2 distinct body styles and the Spridget
