It was, in fact, a blown gasket. Putting it back together and while I see two references to removing the tappet cover, it is not clear to me why this is necessary. Did I miss some important point? Mi

I can only think of one reason for removing the tappet cover and this is where one has too enthusiastically pulled out the push rods. The oil in the top of the tappet acts as a suction and the tappe
