This might be a dumb question but I am sure some of you can relate. How can you tell if a car is using synthetic oil as opposed to the real stuff? My wife wants me to change the oil in her Volvo S60.

FTR I was a technical person for Volvo Cars of North America for 15 years until I retired earlier this year. While the zinc issue is a valid concern for a 40+ year old car, it is not a valid concern

No they are not flat tappet motors. This was the source of my comment that the engines of today are not the same as the engines of yesteryear. Current production Volvo motors are a mechanical lifter
