I'd guess that you had an air leak somewhere. Throttle shafts, perhaps. On my '77, I mounted the manual choke in place of the dimmer. And then mounted the dimmer in the unused rocker switch hole. ___

On my 77B I removed the rheostat for the dash lights. (Anything less than full bright wasn't bright enough for night driving anyway). I then used that spot for the tee handle choke cable. Works great
