I don't know what you plan to haul but my solution has always been a large lockable box. I've made some nice ones out of 14 gauge sheet metal with the lid flush with the bed sides. Usually left 3 or

I've had a tonneau cover on my truck for 8 years or so, have been totally suprised that the color is still great as is not the hard cover its one with all the snaps around the bed sides and tailgate.

you are lucky-your bed is same cover from 1954-1987 shortbed stepside. go wreck yard cruising, goto walmart or other box store or movie theater or place with lots of traffic(dont play on the freeway!
