- I had a problem similar to yours many years ago. I too thought I had fixed it by tightening the "inner" nut. What I did not know was that I had messed up the connection INSIDE the starter. I suggest

- I have usually removed old ring gears by carefully drilling two holes in them and then cutting through with a chisel. Seems to have worked fine for me. Obviously I had a new ring gear ready to go in!
