I'd check out 311s.org, as I think they have a technical discussion of the plusses and minuses of cutting it off. I seem to recall that all one loses is the ability to support the cam gear and chain

Great that you got it fixed, the gasket was what I was betting on. As far as the "L", 1. You could gently bend it back, but if there is any chance of metal fatigue or cracking, I would cut it off 2.
