I don't have any experience; but have done pretty much the same research as you, with pretty much the same conclusion. Note that the homebrew converters, both static and "rotary" flavors also result

One other thing I forgot to mention. My motor is 3 phase, 208 volt. Most of the VFDs are rated for 230 volts. If I drive the motor with a slightly higher voltage, the amp draw should be slightly less
