I have clean cooling water dripping from the timing cover. There is evidence of previous dripping from the water pump, but now it is dry, and there is no evidence of any water travelling from above.

Heater bypass hose? Another place to look is in the head right where the t'stat sits. A-Series heads commonly had casting cracks there that got overlooked by the stringent quality inspectors. Remove
