I recently bought a 30 gal. air compressor 110 and only used it one time without trouble, the other day I turned it on (in my garage) and blew the breaker 2 times. I only had the overhead lights on

There should be a rating on the compressor motor regarding amperage. Compressor motors have a high inrush current meaning they take a lot of amps at startup. A single 100w incandescent draws about 1

Hello derf, you should NOT simply up-rate a breaker and change the outlet from a 15 amp to a 20 amp breaker/receptacle!!! the breaker size is determined by the WIRE size, which also has to be changed

I would second that opinion. The main purpose of the breaker is to trip BEFORE the wire melts and starts a fire. Without knowing the size and type of that wire, there is no way you can safely increas

You can uprate the breaker often times and have no ill effect. Often a much heavier guage of wire was used in the first place. Analyze the wire ga - OK throw the breaker first. "too small wire = too

Derf's point was that the breaker was tripping when the motor tried to start, not under continued use. The extra amperage used at start is of short duration and does not necessarily represent a fire

Thank you. 22ga, lol. If you check you home you'll probably find the same wire size is used for your 15 amp and 20 amp circuits. If you house is very old, then you may have fuses instead of breakers.

A Craftsman 2hp 33 gal compressor motor draws a rated 15 amps. So, running it with anything else on the 15 amp circuit may cause the breaker to trip. I would look into getting an extra 20 or 25 amp
