If you jack up the one side of the car a little, the diff fluid will not leak out. Only a drop or 2 from the axle. It is a lot easier to work on them on the bench. Did you try a torch on the adjuster

The entire car is on stands, so it's a little difficult to jack up just one side now... I haven't tried a torch, all I have is a propane one anyway. I did try a heat gun though... not quite the same,
